THE WEATHER RADAR TOWER WENT

The Finnish Meteorological Institute's new weather radar tower
Date: 12/2020-04/2021
Weight of the steels approx.: 65,000 kg
Project size: ~€0.6m
Form of contract: Total price contract
The load-bearing outer shell of the tower was made of weather-resistant steel elements. The lower part of the tower is a cold space, but
the equipment spaces inside the upper part of the tower are thermally insulated. The total height of the tower is about 32 m.
The weather radar mainly measures the intensity of the rain, finds out the location of the rain areas and their movement as well
wind speed. In addition to weather phenomena, the weather radar can observe, for example, the movement of insect and bird flocks.
The information produced by the radar is also useful for air traffic in observing the weather and dangerous weather phenomena and
thereby also affecting flight safety.
